'96 Hummer wagon runs strong with its original 6.5l turbo diesel. Everything is in good shape for a 16 year old car with 160k miles. Had to rebuild rear brakes, change pads all around, and get a new pitman and idler to solve a shaking problem. Future upgrades - Optimizer engine swap, A/C upgrade.
Bought from Lynch Hummer (was demo) with less than 25,000. Still runs great.
I love this truck, I could not bring myself to purchase a minivan just yet hahaha. Lots of room and this beast is virtually indestructible. I have inadverdently attempted to kill it numerous times (learning as I go oops) and she still starts when I turn the key. Not many up here where I am but the off-road experience is the ultimate in the Canadian Northwest mountains.
Formerly in Southern Maryland.

Keeps going, and going...
No major issues - various sensors, gaskets, and seals replaced. AC is hit or miss, dash lights seem to go on and off at their discretion, random coolant leaks, glow plugs replaced, still a daily driver. Transmission has no issues. Wouldn't trade it for anything. Running surplus military tires and all sets have lasted +30k miles.

134000 miles and runs awsome. Still get excited whenever I drive it.
Old faithful | |||||

Bought in 2000, a daily driver, about $6000 in repairs in 6 years.
Truck had 110k when I bought it in Sept. 2002
Original engine and IP. Holding up well! (knock on wood).
I traded my 06 commins 4x4 for this. Its way worse on fuel, uncomfortable, slow, low powered, drafty, loud. But the cool factor is of the charts! I love it! My wife does not understant.
Drive it 2 days a week. Love it. Have had it 4 years and only put 8000 miles on it.
At risk engine still going strong. Runs amazing!! This truck lives at 80mph and 90 percent of its miles are at highway speed. Stock engine other than fuel supply and some cooling modifications. In addition this truck is in amazing overall condition for its miles and has been well maintained by me.
Lots of hard off-road miles, still kicking...
Bought this H1 2 yrs ago and still runs well as I drive this everyday going to work. Regular maintenance to the dealership. Repaired my heater core, new glow plugs, upgraded soft top to 1998 insulated that makes it look great and installed new alternator. I loved my H1.
This is my second H1. My first was a 94 Open-Top diesel that I put 140,000 miles on in two years, most of that on epic road trips on killer back country roads and on some of the nastiest, truck-eating trails that BC and Alberta have to offer. The truck ate it all up like I was driving grampas caddie to the country club. Phenomenal vehicle!
Favorite pastime driving up and down Rodeo Drive. Not used offroad that much. I also like driving around following my neighbor Arnold around California.
Bought this thing 3 months ago and love it also got me m1102 trailer. Little worried about the ac thing but for the most part I'm keeping it for good. It's a black 4 door truck with soft top little ruff on my he road but I enjoy driving it.
Will never sell best vehicle i have ever owned
Will never sell best vehicle i have ever owned
Bought new in 1997 with 5 miles on it. It's one tough truck. I abuse the hell out of it and it takes it all without breaking. BEST VEHICLE EVER OWNED!!!
I am the second owner. 1st owner put about 119000 miles on it. Still running strong
Drive it all the time, and alot of country miles, Runs great, starts every time, this thing just keeps on going, and going.
Daily Driver M-F /off road on the weekends. New 2001 6.5TB engine installed at 90k miles.
I bought the truck new from Rod Hall in Reno, Nevada. The engine was replaced at 38,000 miles due to the number 8 cylinder crack problem, and the roof was replaced at 78,000 miles due to galvanic corrosion.
Obtained in 1998 w/42k on it. Use it every day and medium off road. Body corrosion on rear panels. Did rebuild on trans, Typical replacement of suspension and brake parts, glow plugs etc, and other minor body, chassis and drivetrain repairs. In need now of a pep tune up. Very good truck overall. I will keep it!
Daily driver. Have had 4K in engine repair (timing chain broken @ 51K, valve rocker broken @83K) and just a few warrantee items. My cost is .91 per mile to drive, (i.e.: fuel, oil, tires, insurance, plates and anything else I put in the truck).
Bought new in '99 with 7 miles on it, drive back and forth to Dallas weekly. Replaced transfer case, and a/c compressor. Still running strong.
Daily driver, bought in 2000 with 36,000 miles. Approx. $5,000 in repairs since purchase (mostly self inflicted, LOL).

3rd engine, original trans, transfer, & Diffs
Awesome vehicle. New motor at 100k, climate control and CTIS are DOA.. but is off road every day and it loves it! The 6.5 N/A reports 11-14 mpg., and it will not tow anything bigger than a jetski up the hills.
Canada |

Engine was replaced at ~30,000 miles from the initial recall. Still running strong. Slight oil leak near the rear of the engine, soon to be fixed.
6.5 turbo, have a squeek that I can't find when it's running, and a e-brake that sticks, that's all I can complain about. One of the most fun toys I own....
Purchased in 1997 with 30,000 miles. Removable hard top, and my daily driver.
Owned since 4/1996 and put all but first ~10,000 miles on her. She is the 6.5L; naturally aspirated; good for ~9-11 MPG highway and ~7-8 on the beach. Soon added Mile-Marker hydraulic winch(like some HMMWV's)and now doing 1st rebuilding of CTIS system completely as have added up armored 24 bolt wheels and switched from GSA tires to M/S ( still prefer GSA's.) Was first year for A/C. Has "97" HVAC upgrade and is on 3rd A/C compressor and 3rd blower fan. Anything that failed has been upgraded with HD AMG replacements (Steering gear, etc.) If she were my daughter we could both legally have a drink of wine and celebrate together! Love my truck!!!
This truck is completly stock, haven't changed a thing since I bought new in 1993.
Love it! My daily driver! You only live once, and nobody lives forever!
- | |||||
Daily Driver, Love it, even Rolled it upside down. Still running strong. Normal problems, easy fixes so far.
Good strong truck. Replaced starter, ds4 fuel pump, lots of sensors, vacum pump, glow plugs, spindle and spring on front (dont jump your truck more than 3 feet). Ive got a couple of rust issues and a new transmission problem lurking. Ive been hit in the back 3 times writing off brand new BMW, Intrepid and Honda prelude this causing severe licence plate damage. You see, thats why im so happy. So happy im going to get another one if i can find one.
All original except for the speed sensor.
I have hade very little problems and have done minor maintenance (Left rear brake caliper leak) on this great machine, I use it every day
Runs great. Just finished a mild restoration job on the steering, brakes, heating, and water system. A total badass truck!
- | |||||
Original engine. No signs of #8 yet (fingers crossed).
Great vehicle, runs perfectly.
Strong running truck, replaced upper/lower ball joints this year and added a military plow mount and Fisher Etreme V. Arrowhead equipment in Queensbury N.Y. did the install and I would recommend them highly. SSDiesel has supplied the 100K mile tune parts and the truck is a pleasure to drive. I try to do all the mechanical work myself and companies like AM General and SAX express have been very helpful.
Dropped in a new turbo and fuel injection system. She is running great (knock on wood) - Always a great day when the Hummer is purring.
New tranny, transfer case, and radiator due to previous owners. Custom paint job gets a lot of attention. Great truck to pick up chicks (ha ha ha). Daily driver, the truck has the 6.2 which is not strong enough to pull a 30 foot boat up a hill at over 30 miles per hour. It's bad on gas miliage (11-13), but who cares....it's so much fun to drive!
New owner, some mods, original engine. LOVE this truck!
Original Owner, Original Engine, Runs fine.
Bought used in Lubbock Texas 2003 with 20,000 miles on it. Replaced alternator, changed fluids often, and did normal maintenance. Still a reliable and fun ride. Spending less time with her as I enjoy my 2006 H1 Alpha Wagon.
I beat up this truck and it still keeps kickin'. YEEEE HAWWW!
3rd Owner, got it Oct 03 with 65000 mi, Reliable running. Repairs required are minimal (mostly cosmetic).
Just converted back into a HUMVEE and did a major service and restoration on all components. Am the second owner (19 years) and it looks and drives like a new vehicle.
Runs great. use it for daily driver and moderate off roading.
- | |||||
