H1 On Charlouleau Gap Road - January 10, 2004

I did the Charlouleau Gap run, just a few miles out of Tucson AZ, about 2 weeks ago in my H1. Those of you that know about it, or have run it, know that it is one of the 10 most challenging roads in AZ. Besides the H1 the convoy included 5 Jeeps, 1 Scout and a Chevy Blazer. I think the road is a little rougher since the fire we had in the Catalina Mountain range last year and the subsequent heavy rains. In fact in one place, if you missed the orange tape hanging in a tree, you would miss the road after is crosses one of the main washes. The road just disappears in a rock debris field. Very narrow in spots for the H1 but with a good spotter it was doable. The H1 performed extremely well. Many of my off road friends that have not seen a Hummer do its "off road thing", were really impressed the way it went through the very rough areas. Take a look at the one photo entitled "Slick Rock". At that point you are about 75% through the run. I felt it was time for some show. When I reached the bottom, I placed the H1 in reverse and backed back up the rock. The tires slipped just for a split second. With the hoots and howls from my friends you could't even hear them slip. A great time was had by all.
