Big Lick Mt.
March 29, 1997, Continued
Most of the trail was an abandoned railroad bed which got narrow at times.
This included a precarious squeeze between a
boulder and the edge of a cliff which Hal and Bill guided everyone around.
The height of the trail ride included a narrow pass on a side slope which forced
a driver to navigate between trees and a boulder, making a 90-degree turn
downhill while on three wheels, in order to clear the rock. To make matters
more challenging, a flash thunderstorm hit, drenching Hal, who was guiding
everyone safely past the hazard.
As fast as it came, the storm was gone and we were on the trails again, only
this time joined by a 4-door green ragtop with a custom tool kit and Stinger
guards. It was Herman (what day is this?).
We regrouped, and it was off to the mines. Guided by Hal’s GPS, we came upon
some abandoned mine entrances. Using the lights from Hal’s truck to peer
into the tunnel, it was like a glimpse back into time.
Complete with original timber supports and ties accented by natural ice
scupture, it looked like a scene out of a movie.
With a full day of adventure behind us, we took our cue, wrapped up the day
and rode off into the sunset.
