Hal Johnson headed up the Pennsylvania leg of the Appalachian Trail Expedition 1997. Living in PA, he's spent quite a bit of time exploring the hills and woodlands and with permission from the property owners, explores the abandoned coal mine areas and strip mine pits north of Harrisburg PA with his fellow AMGeneral Hummer owners. The lineup for the half-way-point trail ride for the three-week AAE (Appalachian Adventure Expedition) includes the original two Land Rover Discovery XD and Land Rover Defender 90 vehicles, along with organizer Bob Hazel's Ford Bronco, two Hummers from the PA Hummer Group, and America's 4X4 4U Video Magazine's Project 88XJ Cherokee.

Strip Minning Operation Special Permit required for this trail.

The "strip" mining operation allows for some great areas to use a four-wheel-drive vehicle, the old trails where mining trucks used to haul coal, and the abandoned pit areas of discarded coal. There are some areas that are still operational, and it's best to stay out of the way of the heavy industrial equipment!
